Distribution:
Northeast Atlantic: southern Norway, Sweden and Shetland I. to Morocco and West Sahara, including the Canaries and the Mediterranean.
Diagnosis: Dorsal spines (total): 0-0. No ocelli on body.
Biology: Found on the continental shelves from close inshore to at least 150 m depth. Reaches 250 cm. It lies, with only its eyes protruding, buried in sand or mud. Nocturnal and may be found swimming up off the bottom. Feeds mainly on bony fishes, but also skates, crustaceans and mollusks. In the northern parts of its range, this species is seasonally migratory, and makes northward incursions during the summer. Utilized fresh and dried salted for human consumption, and possibly for oil and fishmeal.
