Eastern Atlantic: Portugal to Angola, including the southwestern Mediterranean, Madeira, and the Canary Islands.
Biology:
Inhabits hard bottoms (rock or rubble); the young occur near the coast. Feeds mainly on molluscs including cephalopods, and also on crustaceans. Important food fish.
