A scuba diver has been cited for using rubbing alcohol to catch fish off Catalina Island.

The 46-year-old man from Ventura County, whose name was not released, was cited earlier this month for two misdemeanor violations of state Fish and Game code.

The Los Angeles Times reports the man told wardens that he didn't know using rubbing alcohol to collect fish was illegal. The man said he was a licensed collector of aquarium fish.

Authorities said 172 blue-striped gobies were released into the ocean unharmed.
