Fish looking for love are thought to be the cause of a humming noise keeping people awake in Southampton, England.

Some residents are so bothered by the strange noise, which starts at 10pm and lasts all night, that they`ve been forced to flee their homes and live with friends.

Dr Ben Wilson, from the Scottish Association for Marine Science, said it's "not beyond the realms of possibility" that fish are to blame for the noise.

Male midshipman fish let out a distinctive drone to let females know they`re seeking a mate. The nocturnal fish's noise, which can go on for hours, can increase in volume as the males compete with each other.
The sound can be amplified as it bounces off ships and buildings.

A similar noise has reportedly been heard for several years around Seattle, where midshipman fish are also believed to live.
"It's a really low pitched sound that literally pulsates through the house," Southampton resident
