Three members of a hard-up family have died after eating out-of-date tinned fish given to them by well-wishers.

The jobless dad and his wife scraped a living collecting cardboard.

They and two teenage daughters became ill from food poisoning on Friday night but medics delayed admitting them to hospital for more than three hours.

A girl of 14, found in cardiac arrest, could not be revived. Her father, 61, and mother, 50, died later. The second daughter, 13, is “progressing well” in Seville, southern Spain.

A city spokesman said the father applied for public assistance in October. The mayor declared three days’ mourning for the family, who have not been named.

City spokesman Miriam Burgos said: "The family resided in Alcala for some years and although they were not regular users of social services, in October of this year the father had applied for public assistance.”

According to a preliminary report, the family had dined on fish Friday night and fell ill soon after. The health department has conducted an epidemiological survey of the neighbourhood and has also taken food samples from the family’s home for toxicological and microbiological analysis.
