A rare sight on Grimsby Fish Market was captured by auctioneer Nelson Hunter.

The Atlantic Fresh representative snapped the 40 halibut on show ahead of his morning’s work today.

The 20kg to 30kg fish was landed from Faroese waters up at Scrabster, near Thurso in the far north of Scotland, and brought overland to the town’s market, with JBA Fish Sales acting as agent.

“We used to get halibut fairly regularly, but the Icelandics have had a ban on for the past couple of years,” said Mr Hunter. “They are very good with their fisheries policies, if there is a sniff of scientist concern about, they will act.”

The highly regarded flatfish sold for £7 to £8.50 a kilo, which was “not too bad,” according to Mr Hunter.

“The quality was okay, I have seen better, but it is not too often we have seen them in the past few years,” he reported.

Purchasers will be 'steaking-up` the halibut, most likely for distribution in the food service sector.
